Snow Canyon State Park is the closest big outdoor escape for St. George residents — a 7,400-acre canyon of red-and-white Navajo sandstone just a 20-minute drive from downtown, near the towns of Ivins and Santa Clara.

The park was created in 1959 and opened to the public in 1962. It sits inside the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve and is operated by Utah State Parks. In 2025, the park recorded 757,457 visitors, making it one of the most-visited state parks in Utah.

What makes it special

Unlike Zion's towering cliffs, Snow Canyon is a quieter, smaller-scale canyon landscape with a distinctive geology: the extinct Santa Clara Volcano, accessible lava tubes, dark lava flows, and bright sand dunes tucked between sandstone cliffs.

• Hiking: Trails range from easy paved loops (like the Petrified Dunes) to longer canyon routes such as the West Canyon and the Snow Canyon Overlook.
• Lava tubes: Several tubes in the park are open for exploration — check current conditions with park staff, as closures happen for bat habitat and safety.
